About Mechanical Face Seal

Mechanical face seal, also known as floating oil seals or heavy-duty seals, are designed for rotational applications in extremely harsh environments and can withstand severe wear and protect against the ingress of harsh and abrasive external media. It is a high-performance seal that integrates floating ring seal, gap seal, and comb seal. It uses the tension of the oil film to effectively prevent leakage.

Introduction

There are two different types of mechanical face seal: type DO, which uses an O-ring as an auxiliary sealing element; type DF, which uses an elastomer with a diamond-shaped cross-section as an auxiliary sealing element instead of an O-ring. Both types consist of two identical metal sealing rings mounted face-to-face in two separate housings and on ground sealing surfaces. The metal ring is centered within its housing via an elastomeric element, while one half of the mechanical face seal remains stationary in the housing while the other half rotates with its opposite face.

Functions

The main functions of mechanical face seal include the following aspects:

1. Anti-leakage effect: mechanical face seal can effectively prevent liquid or gas from leaking from the sealing part of the equipment, maintain the sealing performance of the system, and avoid energy waste and environmental pollution.

2. Anti-pollution effect: mechanical face seal can prevent external impurities, dust and moisture from entering the inside of the equipment, keep the equipment clean and efficient, and extend the service life of the equipment.

3. Reduce friction and wear: It can reduce friction and wear between the shaft and the sealing surface, reduce energy consumption, and improve the operating efficiency of the equipment.

4. Withstand pressure and temperature: It needs to work under different pressure and temperature conditions, so it is necessary to select appropriate materials and structural design to ensure its stable sealing performance.

Working Principle

The working principle of mechanical face seal is mainly based on the following key points:

1. Fitting of the sealing surface: The sealing surface of a mechanical seal usually consists of two parts, one is a fixed part (seal seat) and the other is a rotating part (sealing ring). The sealing ring is in close contact with the sealing seat through force and friction, forming a sealed joint.

2. Filling of filler: Some mechanical seals fill the space between the seal ring and the seal seat with filler. The filler can adapt to the slight deviation and vibration of the shaft and ensure the stability of the sealing effect.

3. The function of the spring: Some mechanical seals are also equipped with springs. The function of the spring is to maintain a certain fit pressure between the seal ring and the seal seat to ensure the reliability of the sealing performance.

Application Fields

Mechanical face seals are widely used in various fields, including but not limited to the following aspects:

1. Pump equipment: water pumps, magnetic pumps, centrifugal pumps, etc.

2. Compressor: air compressor, hydraulic compressor, etc.

3. Rotor equipment: wind turbines, turbines, etc.

4. Chemical equipment: reactors, evaporators, etc.

5. Food and pharmaceutical industry: food processing equipment, pharmaceutical manufacturing equipment, etc.

Conclusion: Mechanical face seal is an important sealing form widely used in the engineering field. Its function is to prevent liquid or gas leakage, prevent external impurities from entering, and at the same time reduce friction and wear to ensure the normal operation of the equipment. The working principle of a mechanical seal is based on the fit of the sealing surface, the filling of the packing and the action of the spring. In different application fields, mechanical face seals play a key role in ensuring the stable operation and efficient work of equipment and systems.
