V-shaped sealing ring, as the name suggests, is a sealing ring with a V-shaped cross-section. Because the cross-section of the moving parts under pressure is circular, the V-ring is also annular like the O-ring, that is, the end face is V-shaped. It is often used in the reciprocating parts of hydraulic machinery that uses petroleum oil as the working oil. Its purpose is the same as the O-ring, but it is used in places with higher pressure than the O-ring.

A V-shaped sealing ring is a solid rubber seal used on shafts to keep dirt, moisture and other harmful substances from entering the oil seal, housing or any other desired area while keeping lubricant in. It creates a tight seal along the shaft by stretching over the shaft, while the flexible lip seals gently against the mating face at right angles to the shaft.

V-shaped sealing ring perform well on their own and perform exceptionally well in combination with rotary shaft seals, helping to extend the life of bearings, oil seals and shafts. Gamma seals perform the same function as V-shaped sealing ring, but with the added protection of a metal housing.

Performance of V-shaped sealing ring

The maximum working pressure of the V-shaped sealing ring is >60MPa; it is suitable for the working temperature of -30~80°C; the working speed range: the nitrile rubber V-ring is 0.02~0.3m/s; the cloth rubber V-ring is 0.005~0.5 m/s. It can be used for sealing of reciprocating pistons and piston rods of various forms of high-pressure hydraulic equipment and hydraulic machinery. In the case of high working pressure, an oil hole should be opened to make the pressure distribution of the pressure surface of the V-shaped sealing ring even.

The harder the metal material in the contact area of the V-shaped sealing ring is, the longer its service life will be. When used under high pressure and high speed, the surface hardness of the sliding surface should be higher than HS60. Generally, the cylinder body is made of cast iron and steel, and the piston rod is preferably made of hard steel. Aluminum, brass and stainless steel are prone to corrosion when in contact with rubber, which is not good for wear, so it is best not to use it (the cylinder is available). The smooth surface of the sealing surface can not only reduce friction, but it should also be noted that if the sliding surface is too smooth, the lubricating oil will be easily wiped off, which will cause the sealing ring to wear due to lack of lubrication. Generally, the roughness of the inner wall of the cylinder is 0.8~0.40μm. In order to reduce the friction resistance of the V-shaped sealing ring and prolong the service life, lubrication measures should be taken at the sliding part of the seal.

The material used for the V-shaped sealing ring

The materials of V-shaped sealing ring are most commonly used in nitrile rubber and neoprene, natural rubber is used for sealing water and air, butyl rubber is used for non-flammable hydraulic oil and phosphate ester hydraulic oil. Neoprene is used in various chemicals and high temperatures. When wear resistance is required, polyurethane rubber is used. Fabric rubber is also a commonly used material for V-rings. It is characterized by increasing the stiffness and strength of the sealing ring, preventing rubber extrusion and gap bites, and making it suitable for high pressure. At the same time, during the wear process, the rubber wears before the fabric, and when the part with high contact pressure expands, the wear of the entire sealing surface tends to be uniform, while the friction does not change significantly. However, the lip of the fabric rubber sealing ring is easy to scrape off the oil film on the sliding surface, so the lubricity is relatively poor.

Conclusion

The V-shaped sealing ring material is characterized by better comprehensive mechanical properties and good oil resistance, and is a commonly used seal in hydraulic seals. Its medium range is mineral oil, water glycol and water-based transmission fluid/water. In addition, V-shaped sealing ring prevent the ingress of dirt, dust, water or a combination of these media while retaining absolute grease. Due to its unique design and performance, the V-shaped seal can be used in a wide range of various types of bearings, and it can also be used as a secondary seal to protect the main seal.
